Of Counsel
George J. Tomlinson is Of Counsel to Archbald & Spray LLP.  Mr. Tomlinson’s practice is primarily transactional, focusing on domestic and international business matters, including acquisitions, dispositions, tax planning and appeals.  He also handles estate and tax planning and drafts trusts for individuals.  Prior to commencing private practice in Santa Barbara in 1987, Mr. Tomlinson was in-house counsel for several Fortune 500 companies over a period of 18 years.  His last position was General Tax Counsel and Tax Director for Lear Siegler, Inc., where he was an officer of forty-five of Lear Siegler’s domestic and international affiliates.

Mr. Tomlinson began his law career serving in the Chief Counsel’s Office of the IRS. He became a senior trial attorney with that office and served for a period as acting IRS Assistant Regional Counsel, New Orleans, LA.  While serving with the IRS, Mr. Tomlinson drafted a chapter of the IRS Revenue Officers’ Handbook , entitled “Fraudulent Transfers and Transferee Liability.”

Mr. Tomlinson has a unique background in international business transactions, multi-divisional mergers and acquisitions, tax-free reorganizations and complicated business tax planning. His experience also includes creative estate planningsupervision and appeal complicated tax audits.  In 2007, Mr. Tomlinson submitted briefs on a case of first impression before the U.S. Tax Court.

Education
Mr. Tomlinson is a graduate of Principia College and Northwestern Law School.  He is a member of the State Bars of California and Kentucky and is admitted to practice in the United States Tax Court, all courts of the States of California and Kentucky, the United States District Court, Central District of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

Professional Memberships and Activities
Mr. Tomlinson was an active member of Tax Executives Institute, the preeminent association of corporate tax executives, from 1975 to 1987.
