Malcolm Archbald, known affectionately as "Arch", was admitted to the bar in 1931. As a trial attorney in the legal division of Southern Pacific Railroad, he earned a reputation for being an eminently fair, but formidable advocate. In 1948, Arch joined the firm of Spray, Gould, Duckett and Bowers, where he met Joseph L. Spray, son of its founding partner. After 29 years in Los Angeles, Arch moved to Santa Barbara in 1960. Shortly thereafter he established the firm of Archbald & Halde.
Underpinning the firms success has been its attorneys commitment to Archs four key principles for the practice of lawintegrity, industry, intelligence and innovation. In tribute to the firms founders, these "Four Is" are now reflected in the firms four column logo as well as in our approach to the practice of law.

Joe Spray, who had also enjoyed success as a trial lawyer during his 14 years with the Spray, Gould firm, followed Arch to Santa Barbara in 1966. He joined Arch and John Zelezny to form Archbald, Zelezny & Spray. The firm quickly established a reputation as one of the Central Coasts premier civil litigation firms, handling cases throughout Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo counties. Since 1977, the firm has been known as Archbald & Spray, or "A&S".
